The October Garden Walk: Five Questions to Ask Before Winter

October is a good time to slow down and take one last thoughtful walk around the yard before winter settles in.

You do not need to make a long to-do list. Instead, ask yourself a few simple questions that can help you prepare for the months ahead and make better decisions for next spring.

1. Where Are the Gaps?

As summer growth fades, empty spaces become easier to see. Look for areas that could use more structure, privacy, color or year-round interest.

2. What Performed Well?

Make note of the plants that looked especially good this year. These can give you clues about what works well in your light, soil and growing conditions.

3. What Struggled?

If a plant never really took off, ask why. Was it too wet, too dry, too shady or simply in the wrong location? Fall is a good time to rethink problem areas.

4. What Could Use More Winter Interest?

Look for places that may feel bare once the leaves are gone. Evergreens, ornamental grasses, berries, interesting bark and strong plant shapes can help keep the landscape attractive through winter.

5. What Can You Improve Now?

There may still be time to plant trees, shrubs and perennials, refresh mulch, improve soil or fill an obvious gap before winter arrives.

A short October garden walk can help you see your landscape more clearly and make next spring easier.
