Before & After: A Redwood Solution to a Unique Landscape Problem

Every landscape presents its own set of challenges, and sometimes the best solution is not the most obvious one.

On this recent project, the homeowners needed a way to retain soil along the edge of an existing patio. A traditional stacked-stone retaining wall could have solved the problem, but the client preferred a cleaner, less intrusive approach.

Jordan, a foreman on the Redwood Landscaping team, developed a different solution: using low-profile metal raised-bed style edging to create defined planting areas while helping hold the soil in place.

The result solves several problems at once. The edging provides needed soil retention, creates attractive planting pockets alongside the patio and allows the landscaping to remain softer and more garden-oriented than a conventional stone wall would have been.

Hydrangeas were incorporated into the newly defined areas, while the existing shade-loving plantings help soften the transition between the patio, steps and surrounding landscape. As the new plants mature, the structural elements will become even more integrated into the garden.
